An Alphabet Designed by Royal Phonologists

Most of the world's writing systems evolved gradually through millennia of scribal simplifications, phonetic decay, and cultural borrowing. Korean Hangul (한글) is the singular historical exception: it was consciously designed from first principles by King Sejong the Great and the Hall of Worthies (Jiphyeonjeon) in 1446.

In the royal treatise Hunminjeongeum ("The Correct Sounds for the Instruction of the People"), Sejong outlined a system that linguist Geoffrey Sampson termed a featural script.

Physical Anatomy Turned into Graphemes

The foundational consonants of Hangul are literal cross-sectional diagrams of the human vocal tract during articulation:

1. Velar Consonants (ㄱ /k, g/):
2. The shape ㄱ depicts the root of the tongue blocking the throat/soft palate.
3. Alveolar Consonants (ㄴ /n/):
4. The shape ㄴ depicts the tip of the tongue touching the upper alveolar ridge behind the teeth.
5. Bilabial Consonants (ㅁ /m/):
6. The shape ㅁ depicts the closed outline of human lips.
7. Dental/Sibilant Consonants (ㅅ /s/):
8. The shape ㅅ depicts the cross-section of an incisor tooth.
9. Glottal/Throat Consonants (ㅇ /silent or ŋ/):
10. The shape ㅇ depicts the circular opening of the throat (pharynx/glottis).

Stroke Additions: The Phonetic Derivative

From these five anatomical root glyphs, more intense or aspirated sounds are created by adding strokes:
- Base: ㄱ (velar) $\to$ Add stroke for aspiration: ㅋ (/kʰ/)
- Base: ㄴ (alveolar) $\to$ Add stroke: ㄷ (/t/) $\to$ Add stroke: ㅌ (/tʰ/)
- Base: ㅁ (bilabial) $\to$ Add strokes: ㅂ (/p/) $\to$ Add stroke: ㅍ (/pʰ/)

The Philosophical Vowel Matrix

While the consonants represent terrestrial anatomy, the vowels represent Confucian cosmology:
- Horizontal line (ㅡ): The flat Earth (Yin).
- Vertical line (ㅣ): The upright Human standing between Heaven and Earth.
- Dot / Short stroke (•): The Sun in Heaven (Yang).

By combining these three primitives, all primary vowels are generated (ㅏ, ㅓ, ㅗ, ㅜ). Syllables are then stacked into modular two-dimensional square blocks, maintaining the visual rhythm of Chinese characters while providing the pure mathematical efficiency of an alphabet.
